This qualification reflects the role of employees such as production operators in an open cut mine or quarry, who perform tasks involving a broad range of skilled applications in a varied work context, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.

13 Units of Competency :

  • 3 Core unit’s plus
  • 10 Elective units, of which:
    • One (1) must be chosen from Group A
    • One (1) must be chosen from Group B
    • At least three (3) must be chosen from Group C
    • No more than (3) may be chosen from Group D
    • No more than (2) may be chosen from within this training package, or from another endorsed training package, or from an accredited course.

All elective units selected from outside this qualification must reflect current occupational and learning outcomes of this AQF qualification level.

There are both licensed and non-licensed units of competency relating to high-risk work in the Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package. To be appointed under any statutory requirements in related roles, units of competency should be selected to meet the state/territory licensing requirements.

There are prerequisites to imported units listed in this qualification. Where a unit is imported as an elective care must be taken to ensure that all prerequisites specified are complied with.

Entry Requirements :

Mining Train will conduct a Foundation Skills entry assessment at a level required to successfully complete the qualification and work in the industry at the level required for this qualification. Potential clients who are identified as not meeting course entry requirements will be assisted with referral to appropriate support services.

  • In general, participants will need to be physically fit due to the nature of the work
  • Mining Train will conduct a suitability interview prior to enrolment
  • Entrants will be required to be employed in a surface extraction operations role
  • Entrants may be required to have a White Card prior to starting training on the qualification

Course Delivery & Assessment :

There are theory and practical training and assessment components to the course.
Skills will be trained and assessed through a mixture of off-the-job and on-the-job training and assessment.
Participants will be required to have consistent access to activities relating to chosen electives on their worksite.
